The L3 PostgreSQL Engineer is responsible for the administration, performance optimization, high availability, security, and operational support of PostgreSQL databases supporting mission-critical business applications. The role serves as the highest level of technical escalation for PostgreSQL-related incidents and is responsible for ensuring database reliability, scalability, disaster recovery readiness, and continuous service improvement. Key Responsibilities 1. PostgreSQL Administration & Maintenance • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain PostgreSQL database environments. • Manage production, non-production, and disaster recovery environments. • Configure and maintain PostgreSQL clusters. • Perform database provisioning, schema management, and environment setup. • Ensure database availability, integrity, and optimal performance. 2. Performance Tuning & Optimization • Analyze slow-running queries and optimize SQL performance. • Configure PostgreSQL parameters for optimal CPU, memory, and storage utilization. • Optimize indexes, partitions, vacuum processes, and query execution plans. • Monitor database workload and recommend performance improvements. • Conduct regular health checks and performance assessments. 3. High Availability & Replication • Configure and manage PostgreSQL replication environments. • Implement: o Streaming Replication o Logical Replication o Synchronous Replication • Manage automatic failover solutions such as: o Patroni o PgPool-II o RepMgr o Pacemaker • Ensure minimal downtime and maximum availability. 4. Backup & Recovery Management • Design and implement backup strategies. • Manage backup solutions using: o pgBackRest o WAL Archiving o Barman o Native PostgreSQL utilities • Perform recovery testing and validation. • Ensure compliance with RPO and RTO requirements. • Conduct periodic DR drills. 5. Incident & Problem Management (L3 Support) • Serve as the escalation point for complex PostgreSQL issues. • Troubleshoot database outages and performance degradation. • Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for critical incidents. • Resolve replication failures, corruption issues, locking conflicts, and deadlocks. • Support Major Incident Management processes. 6. Security & Compliance • Implement database security controls. • Manage users, roles, and privileges. • Configure SSL/TLS encryption. • Perform vulnerability remediation and security patching. • Ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. • Conduct periodic access reviews and security audits. 7. Monitoring & Capacity Planning • Monitor: o Database availability o Query performance o Replication status o Disk space utilization o Connection usage o Lock contention • Develop monitoring dashboards and alert mechanisms. • Forecast growth trends and perform capacity planning. 8. Cloud Database Management Support PostgreSQL environments hosted on: • AWS RDS PostgreSQL • AWS Aurora PostgreSQL • Azure Database for PostgreSQL • Google Cloud SQL PostgreSQL Responsibilities include: • Database provisioning • Performance optimization • Security management • Backup and recovery • Cost optimization 9. Automation & DevOps Integration • Automate database administration tasks. • Develop operational scripts using: o Python o Shell Scripting o PowerShell • Support CI/CD integration. • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using: o Terraform o Ansible o CloudFormation 10.
