As a Senior Human Factors Engineer - AiBLE Validation, you will serve as the conduit between real-world use and innovative design. You’ll design and lead purposefully crafted customer and clinical studies that reveal how Medtronic’s AiBLE solutions perform in the hands of real surgical teams across patient journeys in Cranial, Spine, and ENT surgery. You’ll listen deeply, observe fearlessly, and translate insights into actionable design evidence which illuminate how our technologies feel, perform, and transform surgical practice in real-world environments – not just in specification. Through your leadership, collaboration, and influence you will apply real-world use centered principles to understand and confirm that solutions truly elevate experience, drive meaningful efficiency, improve patient efficacy, and integrate across our AiBLE ecosystem. In this exciting role as a Senior Human Factors Engineer - AiBLE Validation, you’ll have the following responsibilities, and other duties may be assigned when required: Plan, design and execute real-world clinical and customer evaluations to test and evaluate that solutions perform effectively in actual use scenarios and surgical environments during the product development process. Validate that solutions improve workflow efficiency, usability, reliability, performance, and clinical outcomes under real-use conditions and integrated as part of Medtronic’s AiBLE Ecosystem. Develop and implement qualitative and quantitative methods and criteria in which to demonstrate a product’s safe and effective use. Perform analysis of test results to identify use errors, close calls, operational difficulties, and product defects. Ensure identified product issues are dispositioned and tracked. Document a product version’s end-to-end usability strategy and evaluation outcomes. Apply cognitive and behavioral science to the design of solutions under development and perform heuristic or other usability analyses during design reviews to ensure the product is appropriately designed for actual use. Perform usability failure modes and effects analysis to identify critical tasks, mitigations, and test methodology to demonstrate effectiveness. Develop UI / UX specifications, provide design improvement recommendations, and perform defect analysis to improve use experience or further mitigate risk. Effectively communicate and present findings, challenges, solutions, and recommendations within the team, organization, stakeholder leaders, and outside the organization. Serve as a subject matter expert in design validation, the operation of our products by users in their use environments, design for usability and use experience, the clinical procedures we design products for, and in usability and validation standards regulators expect our products to meet. Lead, mentor, and inspire engineers – building up technical capability and fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, technical rigor, and collaboration. Engage cross-functional stakeholders (Product Management, R&D, Quality, Marketing, Operations, etc) to balance technical excellence, usability, and business objectives to ensure successful execution of programs. Collaborate across Medtronic to ensure best practices are employed in designs and development processes. Drive positive engagement with technical teams and business leaders. Ensure adherence to Medtronic and other quality standards including design procedures and compliance requirements. Occasional international and domestic travel may be required at less than 25%. Required Knowledge and Experience: Bachelor's degree in a technically related field (STEM) with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience Master's degree in a technically related field (STEM) with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience PhD in a technically related filed (STEM) Nice to Haves:Experience in the medical device industry or in the surgery field. Experience leveraging Artificial Intelligence to improve the efficiency of work. Experience in leading cross-functional or multi-platform engineering activities across product definition, specification, test, and launch. Expertise in product design validation and the validation of their integration into an ecosystem of connected products. Expertise in usability standards, tools and models that facilitate design validation. Experience in user experience and user interaction design. Experience in robotic-assisted surgery, computer-assisted surgery, anatomical imaging, and/or remote/cloud-based software design. Expertise in planning and conducting user evaluations of product concepts. Experience with software design and iterative (Agile) software development practices. Experience with hardware design. Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to influence across the organization. Ability to provide creativity while solving complex problems without known solutions. Ability to quickly prototype new concepts and ideas. Ability to align engineering execution with long-term portfolio strategies and roadmaps. Ability to assess new technologies via comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art. Strong communication and storytelling ability – able to simplify complexity for executives while inspiring teams. Strong leadership skills and mentoring capabilities. Strong ability to drive changes throughout the organization. Ability to work with individuals from different geographic locations and cultures.
