Job description

Calling all innovators – find your future at Fiserv. We’re Fiserv, a global leader in Fintech and payments, and we move money and information in a way that moves the world. We connect financial institutions, corporations, merchants, and consumers to one another millions of times a day – quickly, reliably, and securely. Any time you swipe your credit card, pay through a mobile app, or withdraw money from the bank, we’re involved. If you want to make an impact on a global scale, come make a difference at Fiserv. Job Title Engineering Director About your role: At Fiserv, we are modernising a high-volume global payment processing platform — moving from a monolithic, batch-driven architecture to an event-driven microservices platform on AWS. This is a ground-up build: Confluent Cloud for event streaming, Aurora PostgreSQL for persistence, Kubernetes for compute, and a modern Java/Kotlin stack throughout. As an Engineering Director, you will take full ownership of a domain area within the modernisation programme — architecture, delivery, and people. You will go deep on the technical strategy, make the architectural decisions that set direction, build and lead the engineering team, and drive delivery end-to-end. You will have the autonomy to shape and build your engineering organisation, establishing the standards, practices, and culture from the ground up. This is a role for someone who combines genuine architectural depth with the leadership to build a team and the drive to deliver. You won’t delegate the architecture to someone else and manage from a distance — you will be in the detail, setting direction, and getting things moving. As the organisation grows, you will build the leadership structure beneath you, but you will always remain technically authoritative. You believe AI fundamentally changes how software organisations operate, and you will embed it into how your teams design, build, test, and deliver. What you’ll do: Own a domain area end-to-end — architecture, technical strategy, delivery, and team — with the authority and accountability to make decisions and drive pace. Set the architectural direction — designing the target state, making technology and pattern choices, and ensuring the architecture is sound, deliverable, and pragmatic. Build and lead your engineering team — hiring strong engineers, developing them, setting the culture, and creating an environment where quality and pace coexist. Deliver production-quality systems iteratively — you will drive an integration-first, incremental delivery approach rather than big-bang releases. Go deep when needed — whether that’s a design review, a critical technical decision, or unblocking a complex problem, you are comfortable and credible at the detail level. Drive engineering excellence — TDD, contract testing, resilience patterns, observability, and operational readiness are standards you set and hold, not aspirations. Collaborate across the programme — working as a peer with architects, directors, and principal engineers in Dublin and Pune, contributing to programme-wide technical strategy. Champion AI-first engineering — shaping how your teams leverage AI-assisted development across design, code, testing, and delivery workflows. Build organisational structure as you grow — evolving team topology, hiring leaders, and delegating appropriately as your area scales. Experience you’ll need to have: A strong engineering background — you have built and operated distributed systems yourself before leading others to do so, and you remain technically credible at depth. Experience owning architecture and technical strategy — not just reviewing others’ designs, but making the decisions, setting direction, and standing behind them. A track record of building and leading engineering teams — hiring, developing engineers, and creating high-performing teams with strong engineering culture. Deep experience with microservices, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native platforms — Kafka, domain-driven design, resilience patterns, and modern Java/Kotlin. Experience delivering complex modernisations or platform builds — you understand how to sequence work, manage risk, and deliver incrementally while legacy remains live. The judgement to balance strategic thinking with getting things done — you can set a vision and also drive the execution to make it real. A conviction that AI-assisted engineering is transformative, with a vision for embedding it into team culture and delivery approaches. Strong stakeholder management — able to communicate technical strategy, trade-offs, and delivery progress to senior technology and business leaders. Experience that would be great to have: Familiarity with payments, financial services, or high-volume transactional domains is a plus but not essential. Exposure to Confluent Cloud, AWS, Kubernetes, or modern observability platforms is beneficial. Thank you for considering employment with Fiserv.
