Position Summary Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer III to provide dedicated, onsite support at our customer's facility in Morgantown, WV. In this resident engineer role, you will serve as the primary technical resource responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and optimizing sophisticated analytical and microscopy instrumentation. Working directly alongside customer scientists, researchers, and laboratory personnel, you will ensure maximum instrument uptime through preventive maintenance, rapid issue resolution, and proactive technical support. This position offers the opportunity to become a trusted advisor to the customer while collaborating closely with Thermo Fisher Scientific engineering and technical support teams. Although this is a resident on-site position, occasional travel (less than 50%) may be required for training, meetings, or to support other customer locations when needed. Key Responsibilities Serve as the primary onsite Field Service Engineer supporting the customer's laboratory operations. Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and validate advanced analytical and microscopy instrumentation. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize instrument reliability and performance. Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, software, vacuum, electronic, and electro-mechanical issues. Collaborate with remote technical support, engineering, and product specialists to resolve advanced technical challenges. Develop strong customer relationships through exceptional service and technical expertise. Train customer personnel on proper instrument operation, maintenance, and best practices. Maintain accurate service documentation, maintenance records, and reporting within company systems. Ensure compliance with all safety policies, laboratory protocols, and customer site requirements. Support continuous improvement initiatives and share technical knowledge with teammates. Minimum Qualifications Advanced Degree and 3+ years of experience, or Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating sophisticated analytical instrumentation, e.g. mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, and ion chromatography systems. Degree in Electronics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, or another related technical discipline preferred. Demonstrated expertise working with:Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems High-voltage electronics Complex electro-mechanical systems Strong hardware and software troubleshooting skills. Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, electrical schematics, and engineering drawings. Proficiency with Windows operating systems, networking fundamentals, and standard business software. Excellent customer service, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams. Valid driver's license. Ability to travel up to 50% as business needs require (typically significantly less for this resident position). Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely in laboratory and cleanroom environments. Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training and certification programs. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience supporting electron microscopy, spectroscopy, or other advanced analytical instrumentation. Experience mentoring or training junior engineers or laboratory personnel. Strong organizational and time management skills in a customer-facing environment.
