Work Schedule Standard (Mon-Fri) Environmental Conditions Office Job Description As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer. DESCRIPTION As a Mechanical Engineer III within Operations Engineering at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will play a key role in the design, development, testing, and implementation of mechanical solutions for new and existing products. Working at the interface between Operations Engineering, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and external suppliers, you will transform technical requirements and engineering challenges into robust mechanical designs. You will develop and improve mechanical components, assemblies, mechanisms, and supporting systems, using engineering analysis, CAD design, prototyping, and hands-on testing to evaluate and optimize technical solutions. You will be involved throughout the engineering cycle, from initial concepts and feasibility studies through detailed design, prototype builds, verification testing, design improvements, and implementation into manufacturing. A significant part of the role will focus on testing and verification of mechanical designs. You will define test approaches, design test setups and fixtures, perform or coordinate engineering tests, analyze results, identify failure modes, and recommend design improvements. Your work will help ensure that mechanical solutions meet requirements for performance, reliability, robustness, safety, manufacturability, and serviceability. As a Mechanical Engineer III, you will also work closely with external suppliers and manufacturing partners on the development and optimization of mechanical parts and assemblies. You will provide technical requirements, review supplier designs and manufacturing proposals, resolve technical issues, and support prototype and pre-production builds. You will support the transfer of newly developed or modified mechanical designs into manufacturing, ensuring that solutions are robust, manufacturable, testable, and suitable for reliable production. Your combination of mechanical design expertise, practical testing experience, analytical thinking, and hands-on engineering approach will contribute to continuous product and technology development within Operations Engineering. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, mechanisms, fixtures, and technical solutions for new and existing products. Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Translate product, system, and manufacturing requirements into practical and robust mechanical designs. Develop engineering concepts and perform feasibility studies, design evaluations, tolerance analysis, and mechanical calculations. Support and coordinate prototype builds, engineering samples, and experimental setups. Define and execute mechanical testing and design verification activities, including development of test methods, test fixtures, and acceptance criteria. Analyze test results, identify failure mechanisms, and translate findings into design improvements and corrective actions. Perform hands-on troubleshooting and root cause analysis of mechanical and electromechanical issues. Apply engineering principles and structured problem-solving methods to resolve complex product and design challenges. Optimize mechanical designs for performance, reliability, robustness, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and cost. Perform and support tolerance stack-up analysis, material selection, and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA). Collaborate closely with R&D, Operations Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Service, and other engineering disciplines. Work with external suppliers on the design, development, prototyping, and optimization of custom mechanical parts and assemblies. Review supplier drawings, specifications, manufacturing methods, samples, and proposed technical solutions. Support technical evaluation of new materials, manufacturing technologies, suppliers, and mechanical concepts. Support design reviews and provide mechanical engineering expertise during product and subsystem development. Support verification, qualification, and reliability testing of mechanical designs. Provide engineering support for new product introduction, design changes, and transfer of new or modified designs into manufacturing. Ensure mechanical designs comply with applicable engineering standards, product requirements, quality requirements, and safety standards. Drive engineering activities from concept and problem definition through design, testing, validation, documentation, and implementation. REQUIREMENTS Advanced Degree plus 3 years of relevant engineering experience, or Bachelor's Degree plus 5 years of relevant engineering experience. Preferred Fields of Study: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design Engineering, or related technical field. Strong experience in mechanical design, product development, Operations Engineering, R&D, or similar engineering environment. Demonstrated experience designing mechanical parts, assemblies, mechanisms, or electromechanical systems. Strong proficiency with 3D CAD software and engineering drawing creation. Good understanding of GD&T, dimensional tolerancing, tolerance stack-up analysis, and engineering drawing standards. Experience with prototype development, mechanical testing, design verification, and engineering experimentation. Ability to define test methods, develop test setups, analyze test data, and translate results into design improvements. Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, mechanical interfaces, and component design. Knowledge of manufacturing technologies such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, additive manufacturing, casting, or similar processes. Experience applying DFM/DFA principles to mechanical design. Experience with mechanical calculations and engineering analysis; experience with FEA or simulation tools is beneficial. Strong hands-on engineering skills and ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical systems. Experience with root cause analysis, failure analysis, and technical risk assessment. Experience working with external suppliers, manufacturing partners, or prototype suppliers is preferred. Ability to evaluate alternative technical concepts and make engineering recommendations based on performance, reliability, risk, manufacturability, test results, and cost. Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple engineering activities simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, suppliers, technicians, and cross-functional stakeholders. Ability to work effectively in an international and cross-functional engineering environment. Experience in regulated industries and knowledge of relevant quality and regulatory requirements is beneficial. Knowledge of product lifecycle management, engineering change control, and technical documentation processes is beneficial. Experience with new product introduction and transfer of mechanical designs into manufacturing is preferred. Strong technical curiosity, practical engineering mindset, and interest in mechanical design, experimentation, and development of innovative technical solutions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and relevant mechanical engineering software. Ability to travel up to 20%
