Location/Division Specific Information We are a research, development, and production site in Bremen developing high-end analytical instrumentation used in research, industry, and science worldwide. Our innovative products in mass spectrometry and trace elemental analysis are among the leading technologies in their respective markets. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Scientist to join our dynamic Research & Development team in Bremen. As a Technical Lead for new product developments, you will play a crucial role in driving innovation and leading the development of new products within an existing platform. In this position, you will contribute your scientific and technical expertise to the development of next-generation mass spectrometry technologies. The current primary focus of the role is on the development and advancement of Orbitrap-based technologies. Your work will cover a broad range of scientific and technological challenges, including isotope analysis, ion optics, and mass analyzer technology. As a Technical Lead within New Product Development and Introduction (NPDI) projects, you will drive critical technical decisions and guide interdisciplinary teams through the development of new technologies and products, from early research and feasibility studies through system development, verification, and transfer into production. As a key member of our R&D team, you will have the chance to moderate, lead, and facilitate product development projects and collaborate with our global network of sites, where different perspectives and talents come together to achieve common goals. As a key scientific and technical expert, you will work at the interface of fundamental mass spectrometry, ion physics, ion optics, instrument development, and analytical applications. Your primary focus will be on guiding, supporting, and technically leading teams of scientists and engineers. You will help prioritize experiments, analyze and interpret data, develop new concepts, contribute to the definition of software requirements, and solve complex scientific and technical problems. A major part of your work will focus on the development, characterization, and optimization of Orbitrap-based mass spectrometry technologies. You will apply a deep understanding of ion motion, ion optics, mass analysis, and Fourier-transform mass spectrometry to translate fundamental scientific concepts into robust analytical instrumentation. Working closely with scientists, physicists, software engineers, electrical and mechanical engineers, Product Management, Applications, and Operations, you will derive detailed technical specifications and contribute to all stages of product development, from initial research through final production. As a Technical Lead in NPDI projects, you will drive critical technical decisions while fostering effective, collaborative, and evidence-based decision-making across interdisciplinary teams. You will take responsibility for planning, executing, and documenting experiments and for developing comprehensive verification strategies, test plans, and technical reports. You will provide scientific and technical guidance in the development of system and subsystem requirements and help ensure that complex technical challenges are addressed with the appropriate scientific depth. As an integral part of the project cycle, you will coordinate knowledge transfer to Operations, Product Support, Applications, and Field Service teams, enabling them to successfully manufacture, support, and further develop newly introduced instruments. Play an important role in the product development process by creating and maintaining comprehensive and transparent documentation. Effectively communicate development progress verbally and in writing ensuring clear and concise updates to superiors and higher management. Serve as a representative of the company by positive and productive interactions with external customers and collaborators. Experience and Education Demonstrate a track record of 6 years of industrial experience in development of sophisticated analytic instrumentation, showcasing your expertise and dedication in the field. Expert knowledge of scientific principles in Fourier-transform mass spectrometry is an advantage. Strong expertise in Orbitrap mass spectrometry technology is highly desirable. Strong understanding of the underlying physics of mass spectrometry, ion motion, ion optics, and charged-particle dynamics. Experience with SIMION or comparable ion-optical simulation tools is highly desirable. Knowledge and practical experience with quadrupole mass spectrometry and/or quadrupole ion optics is highly desirable. Experience with related or alternative technologies, such as Sector Field mass spectrometry, isotope ratio measurements, high-precision isotope determination, ICP-based ion sources, ICP-MS, or Trace Elemental Analysis, is considered an advantage. Experience with ANSYS or engineering simulation tools is beneficial but is not required. Any previous experience as a Technical Lead or in another technical leadership role is highly appreciated, as it demonstrates your ability to effectively lead and inspire a team.
