Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD. At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them. AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward. THE ROLE: Join us at the forefront of AI. As a Sr. System Design Mechanical Engineer , you'll lead the design, development, and deployment of the physical infrastructure that powers next-generation AI computing, from cutting-edge AI servers and high-density rack systems to advanced liquid cooling solutions. This is a rare opportunity to solve some of the most demanding thermal and mechanical challenges in the industry, working on systems that push the boundaries of what's possible in modern computing. Our high-impact Mechanical Design and Development team has an opportunity for a Sr. System Design Mechanical Engineer at our labs in Secaucus, NJ . Our team is focused on the mechanical development of AMD’s advanced server products and platforms, and your work will span from early-stage concept development through product commercialization, involving both pre- and post-silicon activities. Lead the mechanical design and drive the mechanical architecture for AMD’s flagship server and GPU products used in leading-edge data centers worldwide. Work alongside experts in mechanical, thermal, and structural design and shape the future of high-performance computing hardware. Collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams to drive critical technical decisions and solve complex challenges, delivering robust, scalable, and manufacturable solutions that meet demanding performance, reliability, and cost targets. Be part of a results-driven, collaborative environment where your expertise and leadership directly impact product success. THE PERSON: You are a seasoned mechanical engineering design professional who is self-driven and highly proficient in electromechanical product design, integration, and validation for high-performance computing. You bring a demonstrated ability for innovation and continuous improvement throughout your career, as well as a track record of using your proven engineering expertise to drive best practices and value across an organization. You bring excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a collaborative design mindset, and strong engineering judgment with the ability to evaluate and balance competing technical tradeoffs. You actively listen to diverse perspectives, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and are willing to adapt your approach to drive consensus toward the best system-level solution. You thrive in a fast-paced environment where multiple engineering design teams work together to solve highly complex technical challenges. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Collaborate with a global team to define, design, and integrate mechanical systems for compute and networking products. Lead mechanical development efforts spanning server design, system architecture, rack-level integration, cooling solutions, and laser and optics technologies. Champion Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Reliability (DFR) principles for high-volume production. Participate in and lead design reviews, providing actionable feedback to improve product quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Perform advanced mechanical design and modeling in Creo, conduct tolerance analyses, and develop system-level design solutions aligned with AMD's business strategies. Contribute to post-silicon development through test planning, characterization, data analysis, and support of customer/reference systems. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering their professional growth while serving as a trusted technical authority in design reviews and cross-functional decision-making. Drive the continuous improvement of mechanical design processes and workflows. Champion innovation by introducing emerging mechanical design technologies, methodologies, and engineering best practices that improve performance, reliability, and development efficiency. Use independent judgment and initiative to solve complex mechanical challenges and influence product direction. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Technical Leadership: Advanced experience and demonstrated ability to manage and contribute to multiple technically diverse programs in parallel. Demonstrated success leading complex engineering programs from concept through volume production, with deep knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling design, cost optimization, DFM/DFA, and supplier engagement. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; background of influencing and collaborating across internal teams, external vendors, partners, and geographies. Experience of leading by example and promoting a culture of teamwork and shared success. Technical Experience: Deep understanding of mechanical materials, manufacturing processes (sheet metal, injection molding, die casting, extrusion), and industry standards. Extensive experience in server, AI infrastructure, rack integration, and data center platform design is strongly preferred. Proficiency in developing mechanical solutions at the system level for semiconductor products is essential, including data analysis and product characterization. Proven senior-level experience leading mechanical design and development efforts for server, networking, switch, storage, or related high-performance computing platforms. Advanced proficiency with CAD software such as Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent, including complex modeling and assembly management skills. Proven expertise in the integration of silicon into system-level products, particularly in high-performance computing/server environments. Advanced understanding of thermal management, cooling systems, mechanical modeling tools, and industry-standard design practices. Advanced knowledge of statistical methods, structural analysis, tolerance analysis, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), with expert-level proficiency in Creo and related engineering tools. Optics and laser experience is preferred. Strategic Thinking: Ability to drive the definition and implementation of highly complex mechanical solutions in a dynamic, high-tech environment with evolving business and technical priorities. ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. #LI-MP2 Benefits offered are described: AMD benefits at a glance .
