Lead Firmware Test Automation Engineer Location: Bengaluru, India Business Unit: Intelligent Infrastructure Job Grade: P04 Hiring Manager: Engineering Manager, Firmware & Platform Software About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Lead Firmware Test Automation Engineer to lead the automation and validation strategy for OpenBMC firmware across enterprise server and storage platforms. This role will be responsible for architecting scalable automation frameworks, establishing validation methodologies, driving CI/CD integration, and ensuring firmware quality throughout the product lifecycle. The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in OpenBMC, firmware validation, Python automation, Robot Framework, server management technologies, and test infrastructure development. This position requires strong technical leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to drive automation transformation initiatives across multiple projects and customer programs. How Will You Make an Impact?As a Lead Firmware Test Automation Engineer, you will: Define and drive automation strategies for OpenBMC validation activities. Lead the design and implementation of scalable automation frameworks and validation infrastructure. Improve firmware quality, reliability, and release efficiency through automation. Drive technical decisions related to validation architecture, test coverage, and CI/CD integration. Partner with firmware development teams to improve product quality and accelerate delivery. Guide and mentor automation engineers while establishing engineering best practices. Act as the technical lead for OpenBMC validation initiatives across multiple programs and customer engagements. Key ResponsibilitiesAutomation Strategy & LeadershipDefine and execute the OpenBMC automation roadmap and validation strategy. Lead automation architecture and framework development efforts. Establish automation standards, coding guidelines, and validation best practices. Drive automation adoption across firmware development and validation teams. Mentor and guide engineers on automation technologies and validation methodologies. Lead technical reviews and validation readiness assessments. OpenBMC Validation & Quality EngineeringLead validation activities for OpenBMC firmware and platform management features. Develop and maintain validation plans, automation suites, and test strategies. Ensure comprehensive validation coverage across:Functional Testing Regression Testing Stress Testing Performance Testing Security Testing Compliance Testing Interoperability Testing Drive defect triage, root-cause analysis, and issue resolution. Support customer escalation analysis and field issue investigations. Framework & Infrastructure DevelopmentDevelop and maintain enterprise-scale automation frameworks. Create reusable automation libraries and test abstractions. Develop infrastructure for:Automated firmware deployment Test execution orchestration Platform provisioning Log collection and analysis Automated reporting and dashboards Design and maintain validation lab infrastructure and test environments. CI/CD & DevOps IntegrationIntegrate automated validation into firmware release pipelines. Support continuous integration and continuous testing initiatives. Improve automation execution efficiency, scalability, and reliability. Collaborate with DevOps teams to optimize build and deployment workflows. Cross-Functional CollaborationWork closely with firmware, hardware, platform architecture, and program teams. Participate in requirements reviews and feature discussions. Collaborate with OpenBMC developers to improve feature testability and quality. Support project planning, effort estimation, and risk mitigation activities. Partner with customers on validation requirements and quality objectives. Technical Skills & QualificationsRequired Technical Expertise Strong hands-on experience in OpenBMC validation, automation, and debugging. Expert proficiency in Python and Robot Framework for test automation framework development. Experience automating and validating Redfish, IPMI, PLDM, MCTP, and SPDM interfaces. Strong understanding of OpenBMC architecture, including D-Bus, BMCWeb, Entity Manager, phosphor services, Virtual Media, Firmware Update, and User Management. Experience validating OpenBMC platforms based on AST2500, AST2600, and AST2700 BMC SoCs. Strong knowledge of server platform architecture, BIOS-BMC interaction, inventory management, sensor monitoring, power and thermal management. Hands-on experience with Linux, shell scripting, networking, system services, and log analysis. Experience with firmware validation including functional, regression, stress, performance, security, and interoperability testing. Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills for firmware, software, and hardware integration issues. Automation & DevOps Experience designing and maintaining scalable automation frameworks. Hands-on experience with Jenkins, Git, GitHub/GitLab, Gerrit, and CI/CD pipelines. Experience developing automation for firmware deployment, provisioning, test execution, log collection, and reporting. Familiarity with test management and defect tracking tools such as JIRA . Leadership Competencies Ability to define validation strategies and automation roadmaps. Proven experience leading automation initiatives and improving test coverage. Strong planning, estimation, execution, and risk management skills. Experience mentoring engineers and driving engineering best practices. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional collaboration skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with OpenBMC upstream development or testing. Experience supporting enterprise server, storage, or datacenter platforms. Familiarity with containerized test environments and infrastructure automation. Experience building reusable automation libraries and validation frameworks. Education & ExperienceBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. 8+ years of experience in firmware validation, automation, or embedded systems testing. 5+ years of hands-on BMC/OpenBMC validation and automation experience. Proven experience leading automation initiatives and validation programs. Strong experience with enterprise server, storage, or datacenter platforms. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
