Thesis Work – Motion control limited mechanical dimensioning
ABB Ltd · Vaesteras, Sweden
Job description
At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world. This role sits within ABB's Robotics business, a leading global robotics company. We're entering an exciting new chapter as we’ve announced the plan for SoftBank Group to acquire ABB Robotics. SoftBank is a globally recognized technology group and investor/operator focused on AI, robotics, and next-generation computing. By joining us now, you’ll be part of a pioneering team shaping the future of robotics—working alongside world-class experts in a fast-moving, innovation-driven environment. This Position reports to: R&D Department/Local Unit Lead Take your next career step at ABB with a global team that is energizing the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future. At ABB, we have the clear goal of driving diversity and inclusion across all dimensions: gender, LGBTQ+, abilities, ethnicity and generations. Together, we are embarking on a journey where each and every one of us, individually and collectively, welcomes and celebrates individual differences. At ABB, you can be sure you are helping to create a better world. Why not take the chance to do this while working in one of the most fascinating technology areas in modern industry – Robotics! ABB Robotics is a leading supplier of industrial robots and robot software, in addition to its equipment, and complete application solutions. We are found in 53 countries and have installed more than 500,000 robots, supported by the broadest service network, and offering in the industry. Now we are offering an exciting master thesis within Mechanical Analysis R&D. Within ABB Robotics R&D, the Mechanical Analysis team configures Manipulators by choosing gears, motors, kinematics and arms and analyzing them with FEM. To do even better we constantly evolve our methods to produce faster, more accurate and better-quality products. All the parts of the manipulator must be dimensioned against the loads occurring during motion and to make the best optimized product we must have control over the input for these calculations. In this project you get the chance to do FEM dimensioning in different ways in our manipulators and get the chance to develop the next step. The goal of this thesis is to help develop and prove new concepts of mechanical dimensioning. With the help of both mechanical analysis team and motion control team we dive deeper into ways to make predictive maintenance easier. The new features might even arrive in next generation of manipulators to provide better and more robust industry robots. Details: January-June 2027 30 ECTS/högskolepoäng(hp) One student Most time on site in Västerås Your responsibilities Investigate different partly pre-defined concepts of dimensioning Collaborate with both mechanics and motion team. Set up and perform load calculations on manipulators with rigid body simulations Verify and compare ways of dimensioning Evaluate arms and machine elements with both FEM and analytical formulas Living ABB’s core values of safety and integrity, which means taking responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business. Your background Engineering student in Mechanical engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Applied and Computational Mathematics or similar profile.
