3M · US, Minnesota, Maplewood
Job description
Job Description: Job Title Director, Strategy & Business Development Collaborate with Innovative 3Mers Around the World Choosing where to start and grow your career has a major impact on your professional and personal life, so it’s equally important you know that the company that you choose to work at, and its leaders, will support and guide you. With a wide variety of people, global locations, technologies and products, 3M is a place where you can collaborate with other curious, creative 3Mers. This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career. The Impact You’ll Make in this Role 3M’s Consumer Business Group (CBG) is the ~$5 billion business behind Post-it®, Scotch®, Command™, Scotch-Brite®, Filtrete™, Meguiar’s®, Nexcare™ and ACE™ — brands that hold the #1 or a leading share position in the large majority of the categories where they compete, backed by 3M’s material-science innovation engine and margins at the top of the consumer peer set. CBG is in the middle of a deliberate transformation into a top-tier consumer packaged goods organization: one global brand-portfolio operating model executed across five area markets, and three growth priorities — portfolio reinvention, demand generation, and distribution & channel. The Strategy & Business Development team reports to the Consumer Group President, and it sits where the $5 billion choices get made. This Director role reports to the Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, and is built for someone who has led hypothesis-driven strategy or transformation work at a top-tier consulting firm or inside a leading CPG company and now wants to own the answer and the outcome, not just the recommendation. You will own two to three CBG-priority initiatives at a time, from blank page to embedded change, with the mandate and air cover to land them, and you will shape the materials that go to the Group President, CEO, and Board. As a Director, Strategy & Business Development, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by: Shaping CBG’s multi-year strategic roadmap — building the three-year plan and the category, channel, and area strategies beneath it (where to play, how to win, what to stop), with explicit revenue, margin, and investment implications. Leading two to three high-priority transformation initiatives end to end — from problem framing and hypothesis-driven analysis through execution, adoption, and measured P&L impact — across operating-model redesign, portfolio simplification, revenue growth management, ecommerce and retail media, and international go-to-market. Evaluating and building business development opportunities — screening acquisitions, licensing, divestitures, and strategic partnerships against CBG’s strategic filters, and building the business cases that inform investment decisions. Running CBG’s strategic planning and performance cadence — annual operating planning, KPI definition, initiative tracking, and long-range planning with Finance — so it works as a decision engine rather than a reporting exercise. Preparing executive-ready materials and decision support for the CBG leadership team, Group President, CEO, and Board forums, while leading cross-functional project teams and external advisors to deliver. What you get in return: a direction-setting seat in a $5 billion consumer business at a pivotal moment in its transformation; a focused set of priority initiatives with the mandate to land them; ongoing exposure to the CBG leadership team, Group President, and 3M enterprise leadership; and a recognized launch pad, because the strategy team is a talent pool for broader leadership roles across CBG and 3M. Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) Seven (7) years of experience in consumer-packaged goods strategy, transformation, commercial, or marketing roles and/or in strategy consulting serving consumer and retail clients, in a private, public, government or military environment Five (5) years of experience leading strategy or transformation projects end to end, from problem framing and hypothesis-driven analysis through executive alignment and implementation Five (5) years of experience building P&L, business-case, and scenario models and working with consumer, retail, pricing, promotion, or syndicated data Five (5) years of experience influencing and partnering across a matrixed organization, including functions such as Finance, Marketing, Commercial, Supply Chain, R&D, or HR Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include: MBA or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited institution Experience at a top-tier strategy consulting firm serving the consumer sector, a leading CPG brand owner, or a leading retailer — ideally more than one of these Hands-on experience in one or more of CBG’s growth levers: portfolio and lifecycle management, revenue growth management, ecommerce and retail media, route-to-market, brand strategy, or digital demand generation Corporate development experience (deal screening, valuation, due diligence, integration, separation, or strategic partnerships) and/or experience leading a transformation PMO or operating-model change International or multi-market experience, executive-level communication and facilitation skills, and fluency with AI-enabled analysis and productivity tools Work location This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN.
