Monitoring & Observability Staff Engineer
Insmed · NJ Corporate Headquarters
Job description
At Insmed, every moment and every patient counts — and so does every person who joins in. As a global biopharmaceutical company dedicated to transforming the lives of patients with serious and rare diseases, you’ll be part of a community that prioritizes the human experience, celebrates curiosity, and values every person’s contributions to meaningful progress. That commitment has earned us recognition as Science magazine’s No. 1 Top Employer for five consecutive years, certification as a Great Place to Work® in the U.S., and a place on The Sunday Times Best Places to Work list in the UK. For patients, for each other, and for the future of science, we’re in. Are you? About the Role: We are seeking a Staff Engineer to own the technical strategy for observability across Insmed's global network, infrastructure, and cloud estate. This is the most senior individual contributor role in the monitoring discipline. You will set the multi-year observability roadmap, act as the final technical authority on Dynatrace architecture and drive adoption of monitoring standards across Network, Infrastructure, Cloud, DevOps and Application teams. Dynatrace is our primary platform, but this is not a single-tool role. You will own the wider telemetry ecosystem, including ThousandEyes for service health and native cloud monitoring services and decide where each tool belongs. The role carries enterprise-wide influence without direct reports. Success depends on your ability to build consensus, mentor other engineers and make architectural decisions that hold up over years rather than sprints. What You'll Do: In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to own the enterprise observability strategy and multi-year roadmap, covering platform architecture, tool rationalization, data retention, and a substantial focus on AI-driven operations. You’ll also: Serve as the technical authority for Dynatrace architecture; tenant and management zone design, ActiveGate topology, OneAgent deployment patterns, Grail data ingestion and multi-environment scaling. Define the reference architecture for full-stack observability across metrics, logs, traces and events; spanning infrastructure, APM, RUM and synthetic monitoring and hold teams to it through design review. Define the observability architecture for multi-cloud workloads, integrating GCP Cloud Monitoring and Logging, AWS CloudWatch and Azure Monitor with Dynatrace. Evaluate emerging capabilities with the likes of OpenTelemetry, eBPF-based instrumentation, AIOps and make build-versus-buy recommendations to IT leadership. Automate the full monitoring lifecycle through Dynatrace APIs, Monitoring as Code (Dynatrace Configuration as Code / Terraform) and CI/CD pipeline integration. Build advanced queries, dashboards, and Notebooks that translate telemetry into decisions for engineering and executive audiences. Lead architecture and technical design reviews for monitoring changes affecting production or GxP-relevant systems. Design SLAs, SLOs, onboarding paths, self-service tooling, and documented consumption patterns for tenant teams. Act as the senior escalation point during major incidents, using telemetry to isolate root cause across the network, infrastructure, and application layers. Mentor engineers across Network, Infrastructure, Cloud, and DevOps, raising the monitoring standard through review and enablement rather than mandate. Who You Are: You have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field as well as a minimum of 10+ years in IT infrastructure, monitoring, observability or network engineering. You are or also have: At least 6 years of hands-on experience with Dynatrace, including OneAgent and ActiveGate deployment at scale, Smartscape, Davis AI, SLO configuration, DQL and API-driven automation. A minimum of 4 years designing and operating monitoring for public cloud environments (GCP and/or AWS). Hands-on experience with at least one complementary observability platform (Grafana, Splunk, or equivalent) and clear judgment about where each tool belongs. Demonstrated experience with Dynatrace: OneAgent, ActiveGate, Smartscape, Davis AI, Grail, DQL, SLOs, Workflows, Configuration as Code, REST APIs. Proven experience with complementary platforms such as Grafana dashboarding and data sources; Splunk search and log analytics; native cloud monitoring services. Proven Networking (Cisco) experience with Catalyst switching, ISR routers, Meraki, DNA Center, OSPF, BGP, IPSec VPN, RADIUS/NPS, NetFlow and streaming telemetry. Mult-cloud platform experience with GCP (Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, VPC, IAM, Compute Engine, GKE); AWS (CloudWatch, Config, CloudTrail, VPC, EC2, EKS, IAM). Knowledge of Containers such as Kubernetes, Docker, and OpenShift monitoring and instrumentation. Automation experience using Python, PowerShell, or Bash; Terraform or equivalent infrastructure-as-code tooling; CI/CD pipeline integration. Knowledge of ITSM and DevOps toolchain: ServiceNow integration and workflow automation; pipeline-embedded quality and monitoring gates. Solid understanding of Frameworks: ITIL, change management, SRE practice (SLI/SLO/error budgets), Agile delivery. Nice to have (but not a must): Azure Monitor exposure. Experience delivering monitoring in a regulated or GxP environment. Where You’ll Work This is a hybrid role based out of our Bridgewater, NJ office.
