Description The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) / Associate Director, MSL is a field-based scientific expert on a nationally focused Eye Health team within Emerging Areas Clinical Development and Medical Affairs. The role reports to the MSL Team Lead and is responsible for high-quality, peer-to-peer scientific exchange with prioritized Scientific Experts (SCEs) and other appropriate healthcare stakeholders. The MSL will build trusted scientific relationships, gather actionable insights, and support Eye Health Scientific Objectives and strategic decision-making across Medicine and Research. The role requires strong knowledge of retinal diseases and the evolving ophthalmology ecosystem, including patient journeys, diagnostic and imaging practices, treatment paradigms, evidence gaps, and clinical-development priorities. The MSL will serve as a scientific resource regarding disease states and Boehringer Ingelheim's investigational Eye Health portfolio, consistent with approved materials, applicable policies, and Medical independence. Duties & Responsibilities Customer Interactions and Scientific Exchange The primary objective of the role is to plan, prepare for, and conduct field-based scientific exchange in support of Eye Health Scientific Objectives. Responsibilities include: Conduct balanced, evidence-based scientific exchange with prioritized SCEs and other appropriate HCPs across retinal diseases, including diabetic retinal disease, diabetic macular edema, geographic atrophy, age-related macular degeneration, and other retinal pathologies aligned with the Eye Health portfolio. Establish and maintain peer-to-peer scientific relationships with retina specialists, comprehensive ophthalmologists, optometrists, clinical investigators, imaging experts, researchers, academic centers, and other relevant stakeholders. Develop a strong understanding of territory-specific referral networks, patient journeys, diagnostic and imaging practices, clinical workflows, treatment patterns, access considerations, and research interests. Respond to unsolicited scientific questions regarding Eye Health disease states, clinical evidence, and Boehringer Ingelheim compounds in a compliant, objective, and non-promotional manner. Provide disease-state education aligned with approved Scientific Objectives and identify educational needs, evidence gaps, and emerging scientific questions. Participate in scientific congresses and medical meetings, including pre-congress planning, scientific engagement, insight capture, and post-congress synthesis, as assigned. Eye Health Scientific Expertise Maintain current expertise in retinal anatomy and physiology, retinal disease pathophysiology, standards of care, treatment burden, and evolving therapeutic approaches. Interpret and discuss ophthalmic imaging and endpoint concepts relevant to retinal development programs, including OCT, OCT-angiography, fundus autofluorescence, ultra-widefield imaging, fluorescein angiography, visual-function measures, patient-reported outcomes, and other emerging biomarkers, as appropriate to the role. Monitor emerging agents, mechanisms, clinical trials, publications, guidelines, and scientific trends across the Eye Health landscape. Translate complex scientific and clinical information into clear, balanced discussions tailored to the needs of specialist audiences. Territory Planning and Stakeholder Strategy Develop and execute a territory-specific medical engagement plan aligned with Eye Health Scientific Objectives, portfolio priorities, and approved customer-identification and prioritization processes. Map and prioritize relevant SCEs and stakeholder networks using objective criteria, internal data, field knowledge, and cross-functional input. Continuously evaluate the engagement plan based on evolving evidence, portfolio milestones, stakeholder needs, and healthcare-landscape changes. Identify gaps between external stakeholder needs and current scientific resources and communicate those needs to appropriate internal partners. Collaborate with Stakeholder Relations, Medical Affairs Strategy, Medical Customer Experience, Clinical Development and Operations, and Global Medical partners while maintaining clear role boundaries and Medical independence. Requirements MSL Requirements: BSc. required plus one of the following: Advanced science/clinical degree with 1+ years’ relevant experience (preferred). Masters in health sciences with 3+ years’ experience. BSc. with MBA or BSN with MBA, and 5+ years’ experience. PA with 3+ years’ experience. Other medical licensure with 7+ years of experience. 2+ years’ MSL experience in relevant therapeutic area – preferred. Skills: Strong communication, ability to interpret scientific data, knowledge of regional healthcare systems, field-based job with 50% travel, use of electronic communication tools. AD, MSL Requirements: BSc. required plus one of the following: Advanced science/clinical degree with 3+ years’ relevant experience (preferred). Masters in health sciences with 5+ years’ experience. BSc. with MBA or BSN with MBA, and 7+ years’ experience. PA with 5+ years’ experience. Other medical licensure with 9+ years of experience. 2+ years’ MSL experience in relevant therapeutic area – required, 4+ years preferred. Skills: Strong communication, ability to interpret scientific data, knowledge of regional healthcare systems, field-based job with 50% travel, use of electronic communication tools Eligibility Requirements : Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction. Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required). Must be 18 years of age or older. Additional Duties & Responsibilities Clinical Development and Evidence Support Partner with Clinical Development and Clinical Operations, in alignment with approved processes, to support scientific engagement with current and potential investigators and clinical-trial sites. Gather and communicate field insights relevant to trial feasibility, patient identification, referral pathways, imaging and endpoint implementation, participant burden, retention, and site experience. Support identification of evidence gaps and research questions that may inform clinical-development planning, publications, medical education, or future evidence-generation activities. Insight Generation and Communication Identify and document high-quality scientific insights in approved systems. Synthesize themes across engagements and communicate implications to appropriate internal stakeholders. Monitor changes in retinal care delivery, stakeholder networks, diagnostics, imaging, clinical research, treatment patterns, and access that may affect Eye Health strategy. Compensation:
