As Amgen continues to invest in discovery research and early pipeline development, the Disease Area Strategy Lead (DASL) function plays a critical role in shaping where we invest and how scientific innovation is translated into differentiated medicines with meaningful value for patients. The Director, Disease Area Strategy Lead – General Medicine will help shape the future of Amgen’s General Medicine portfolio by integrating scientific, clinical, patient, competitive and commercial perspectives into therapeutic area, portfolio and early asset decisions. The role operates at the intersection of R&D, commercial, and therapeutic area strategy. Working closely with the Executive Director DASL and cross-functional leaders, the Director will lead the ongoing development and evolution of the General Medicine therapeutic area strategy and translate strategic priorities into implications for disease areas, franchises, pipeline investments and individual programs. The Director will also serve as the Commercial strategic lead for early pipeline projects and programs from discovery through early development. Success in this role requires strong strategic judgment, scientific curiosity and commercial acumen, combined with the ability to build trusted cross-functional partnerships and drive complex questions toward clear recommendations and decisions. In this role you will be responsible for the following: Therapeutic Area Strategy Lead the ongoing development and evolution of the General Medicine (Cardiovascular Disease and Bone Health) therapeutic area strategy, in partnership with the Executive Director DASL and cross-functional leaders. Translate TA ambitions into disease and franchise priorities, portfolio implications, investment priorities and strategic actions. Maintain a forward-looking view of evolving science, standards of care, patient and customer needs, competitive dynamics and Amgen’s portfolio, and assess implications for strategy. Assess where Amgen has a differentiated right to win, where opportunities warrant investment, and where we should remain selective or deprioritize investment. Ensure asset and program decisions remain connected to broader TA and franchise strategy, including explicit tradeoffs across assets, diseases, mechanisms and platforms. Partner with Business Development and Commercial BD to inform external innovation priorities and opportunity assessments in the context of The General Medicine TA and portfolio strategy. Early Pipeline & Program Commercial Leadership Serve as the Commercial strategic lead and representative for early pipeline projects and programs, developing and representing the Commercial point of view through program evolution and governance. Partner with Research, Development, Medical and other functions to define the patient population, unmet need, future treatment context, differentiation requirements, product profile and evidence needs for a compelling opportunity. Identify critical strategic and commercial questions early enough to influence research, development and investment choices. Assess whether scientific and technical success can translate into a differentiated and commercially attractive medicine, and develop recommendations regarding progression, investment, partnering or discontinuation. Lead cross-functional team in the creation of target product profiles and development strategies that reflect patient needs, future standards of care and meaningful differentiation. Lead New Product Planning and early commercial assessments for assigned programs, including market and competitive assessment, patient segmentation, positioning, forecasting and commercial opportunity assessment to inform product and investment strategy. Drive cross-functional opportunity assessments (e.g., forecast estimates, eNPVs, competitive landscapes) across development stages to inform indication prioritization, sequencing, and patient impact expansion opportunities. Cross-Functional Leadership & Strategic Decision Support Partner across Research, Development, Medical, Competitive Intelligence, Business Analytics and Insights, Commercial and other functions to drive complex asset- and therapeutic area-level strategic work, bringing together the right expertise, challenging assumptions, building alignment and moving critical questions toward decisions. Structure ambiguous strategic questions and identify the issues, assumptions and evidence most important to the decision. Integrate qualitative and quantitative evidence, including scientific and clinical data, customer and KOL insights, competitive intelligence, epidemiology, market research, RWE, forecasting and analytics. Develop clear recommendations despite uncertainty, communicate complex conclusions concisely, and influence effectively without formal authority to create clarity, alignment and momentum. Basic Qualifications: Doctorate degree and 4 years of marketing and/or commercial experience, OR Master’s degree and 7 years of marketing and/or commercial experience, OR Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of marketing and/or commercial experience. Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree such as an MBA, PhD, PharmD, MD, MPH or other relevant scientific or business discipline preferred. Experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, life sciences strategy consulting or a related field, with demonstrated ability to solve complex strategic and commercial problems. Experience in New Product Planning, pipeline commercial strategy, portfolio strategy, commercial development, strategy consulting, forecasting, market research, analytics, business development or related disciplines, with ability to integrate across functions. Experience evaluating early-stage assets, disease opportunities or product concepts, including patient need, future treatment landscapes, differentiation, positioning and commercial potential. Therapeutic area experience in cardiovascular disease, bone health, or other General Medicine areas preferred, with demonstrated ability to rapidly build expertise across new diseases and scientific areas. Strong scientific and clinical learning agility, with the ability to engage credibly with scientific and clinical experts and translate technical information into strategic implications. Strong qualitative and quantitative strategic judgment, including the ability to structure ambiguous problems, identify decision-critical assumptions, evaluate tradeoffs and develop recommendations despite uncertainty.
