This Position reports to: R&D Team Lead Your role and responsibilities Agentic AI systems can autonomously generate operational recommendations for industrial process plants. As industrial operations become increasingly autonomous, there is a growing need for mechanisms that can assess whether AI-generated actions are trustworthy and safe, consistent with plant constraints, and suitable for execution. This thesis investigates the verification of operational recommendations produced by agentic AI systems in industrial process environments. It contributes to the ongoing development of trustworthy autonomous operations by providing greater confidence in AI-assisted decision-making for industrial processes. Details: Period: January 2027-June 2027, 5 months Number of credits: 30 ECTS Number of students for this thesis work: 1 Location: ABB Corporate Research (Västerås) The goal of this thesis is to develop and evaluate a verification framework that assesses AI-generated operational actions before execution, ensuring they are safe, feasible, and compliant with operational constraints. The framework will be integrated with a process simulator and ABB Ability™ System 800xA® and evaluated with respect to operational performance, reliability, and deployment cost. Qualifications for the role Master’s student with background in control systems, automation, and process engineering. Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or a similar language. Basic understanding of process dynamics and simulation. Familiarity with optimization, machine learning, or AI concepts is beneficial.
