Job Description At LinkedIn, our approach to flexible work is centered on trust and optimized for culture, connection, clarity, and the evolving needs of our business. The work location of this role is hybrid, meaning it will be performed both from home and from a LinkedIn office on select days, as determined by the business needs of the team. Our vision is to ensure that every human and resource at LinkedIn is provided a non-repudiable identity that is used for secure communication, every access to data at LinkedIn is safe and all secret material is cryptographically protected. Our mission is to make this security infrastructure intuitive, performant, and secure. We build highly reliable and scalable services and developer-friendly infrastructure that enable engineering teams across the company to create and integrate secure features and proactively protect our members’ data. The Identity Development (IDD) team builds the identity services and developer tools that help keep LinkedIn’s people, systems, and data secure. We make secure identity and access capabilities usable across LinkedIn’s engineering ecosystem—from single sign-on and authentication tooling to host access and directory services. Our work includes services and libraries that support SSO, certificate-based host access, and identity and directory lookups. These capabilities serve internal engineering teams and operate at LinkedIn scale, where reliability, security, and a thoughtful developer experience are essential. You’ll join a collaborative team working across security, infrastructure, and product engineering to make secure access the straightforward path. Role overview As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and operate identity platforms and tools used by engineering teams across LinkedIn. You’ll take ownership of significant projects from problem definition through production, make sound technical decisions, and partner with teams across the company to deliver secure, reliable, and intuitive solutions. You’ll also help raise the technical bar through design and code reviews, operational excellence, and mentorship. Responsibilities Design, develop, and operate scalable identity and access services, libraries, and developer tools. Lead technical projects end to end: clarify requirements, evaluate trade-offs, produce designs, deliver implementation, and measure results. Build secure authentication and authorization experiences, including capabilities such as SSO, identity lifecycle integrations, certificate-based access, or directory services. Develop reliable distributed systems and APIs that meet demanding availability, performance, and security requirements. Partner with infrastructure, security, and product engineering teams to understand integration needs and deliver solutions that are easy to adopt. Apply security and privacy principles throughout the software lifecycle, including threat-aware design, least privilege, and secure handling of credentials and identity data. Improve service health through monitoring, testing, incident response, and operational practices; participate in the team’s on-call rotation as needed. Contribute to technical direction through design reviews, code reviews, and clear engineering documentation. Mentor engineers and share practices that improve code quality, team effectiveness, and developer experience. Qualifications Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. 4+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, and operating production software. 4+ years of programming experience in one or more languages such as Java, Go, or Python. Experience with identity and access management, authentication, authorization, SSO, directory services, or identity lifecycle management. Experience building backend services, APIs, or distributed systems. Experience taking software changes through development, testing, code review, deployment, and production support. Experience working effectively with technical partners across teams. Preferred Qualifications Experience designing or operating large-scale, highly available distributed systems. Familiarity with security protocols and concepts such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, TLS/mTLS, public key infrastructure, SSH, or certificate-based authentication. Experience with infrastructure automation, CI/CD, containers, or Kubernetes. Experience improving the security, reliability, observability, or usability of internal developer platforms. Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects, mentor peers, and influence decisions beyond an individual assignment. Experience leveraging AI for production-grade code development. Interest in building secure systems that are intuitive for developers and operate reliably at significant scale. Suggested Skills Distributed Systems Identity and Access Management Authentication and Authorization Java/Go/Python Production Operations You will Benefit from our Culture: We strongly believe in the well-being of our employees and their families. That is why we offer generous health and wellness programs and time away for employees of all levels. LinkedIn is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices.
