Senior Manufacturing Engineer
ASML · San Diego, CA, USA
Job description
Introduction to the Job ASML brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers—the world’s leading chipmakers—to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States, including main offices in Wilton, CT, Chandler, AZ, San Jose, CA, and San Diego, CA. You must be work authorized in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship Role and Responsibilities The Senior Manufacturing Engineer is a senior individual contributor responsible for the manufacturing readiness and technical performance of assigned prototype test rigs, products, modules, or manufacturing domains. The role connects product development with hands-on factory execution by planning and supporting prototype builds, integration, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. Working across design, systems, test, quality, manufacturing, planning, and project teams, the engineer converts prototype learning into safer, more repeatable, scalable, and cost-effective manufacturing solutions. The role leads through technical expertise and influence and does not have formal people-management authority. Prototype Test-Rig Engineering and Factory Readiness Plan and support prototype test-rig build, integration, test, commissioning, troubleshooting, modification, and decommissioning activities. Assess execution readiness for procedures, tooling, test methods, technical information, resources, and approvals. Establish safe, executable assembly, integration, and test sequences for new or evolving hardware and systems. Coordinate tooling, equipment, material, documentation, facility, safety, hardware, software, and engineering dependencies. Capture test-rig learning and apply it to product designs, procedures, sequences, tooling, test methods, manufacturability, and future factory readiness. Manufacturing Process and Technical Ownership Own assigned manufacturing processes or technical domains and provide readiness leadership across dependent factory activities. Develop and improve manufacturing methods, procedures, tooling, equipment, test methods, and process controls. Evaluate and qualify manufacturing changes, including engineering changes and approved departures from standard requirements. Analyze yield, quality, cycle time, capacity, reliability, safety, and cost performance to identify improvements. Lead complex problem definition, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and recurrence prevention. Cross-Functional Product and Module Engagement Serve as the Manufacturing Engineering focal point for an assigned cross-functional product or module leadership team, referred to internally as an MDU. Convert stakeholder objectives, constraints, and decisions into clear Manufacturing Engineering actions and ownership. Prepare decision-ready technical recommendations supported by evidence, factory impact, implementation risks, and required decisions. Communicate risks, decisions, commitments, and changes to affected teams and confirm follow-through. Planning and Execution Coordination Translate ambiguous objectives into executable plans with clear scope, deliverables, owners, milestones, dependencies, and success criteria. Coordinate interdependent technical work across engineering contributors and assigned manufacturing domains. Identify technical, resource, schedule, and readiness risks and coordinate mitigation with responsible owners. Escalate unresolved decisions with the impact, options considered, and a recommended path forward. Coaching and Capability Development Coach engineers in technical problem solving, execution planning, stakeholder preparation, and follow-through. Prepare engineers to represent their assigned technical domains with product, module, and cross-functional stakeholders. Review technical plans, risk assessments, presentations, and recommendations before key decisions. Build distributed ownership of critical knowledge, responsibilities, and stakeholder relationships. Continuous Improvement and Knowledge Transfer Convert prototype and factory lessons into sustainable improvements to products, processes, tooling, test methods, and training. Standardize effective manufacturing methods, planning practices, procedures, and technical documentation. Improve handoffs among the engineering function supporting prototype test-rig build, integration, test, commissioning, troubleshooting, and learning capture; the engineering function supporting repeatable integration and test execution across systems, modules, and factory operations; and related manufacturing teams. Share technical knowledge across engineers, technicians, and cross-functional stakeholders. This senior individual-contributor role leads assigned technical work and stakeholder interfaces through expertise, planning, coaching, and influence. The role is accountable for ensuring work is clearly scoped, appropriately owned, integrated, and communicated. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or higher in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline; an advanced degree or equivalent experience is preferred. Minimum of five years of relevant experience in complex manufacturing, prototype, new-product introduction, integration, test, industrialization, or a closely related engineering environment. Experience with complex high-technology systems, such as electromechanical, mechatronic, vacuum, fluid, laser, or controls systems. Experience supporting prototype test-rig build, integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, qualification, or manufacturing readiness. Experience developing manufacturing processes and applying structured problem-solving methods. Experience leading root-cause analysis, corrective action, and recurrence prevention. Experience providing cross-functional technical leadership without formal reporting authority. Experience with technical planning, risk management, stakeholder communication, manufacturing documentation, bills of material, engineering changes, procedures, or product industrialization. Familiarity with statistical analysis, design of experiments, process capability, Lean methods, data visualization, and relevant planning or analytical software is preferred. Skills Apply sound technical judgment in ambiguous prototype and evolving factory environments. Maintain a strong manufacturing and factory focus across safety, quality, delivery, cost, manufacturability, and execution. Assess end-to-end system impacts across products, modules, test rigs, processes, and factory operations. Influence cross-functional teams and build alignment without formal authority. Communicate complex technical information clearly to engineers, technicians, stakeholders, and senior management. Structure work through clear scope, priorities, ownership, dependencies, risks, and decisions. Coach others and transfer technical knowledge to strengthen team capability. Demonstrate ownership, attention to detail, adaptability, and reliable follow-through. Other Information The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Routinely sit, walk, talk, hear, use hands to keyboard, finger, handle, and feel, and stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and stretch. Work in a cleanroom environment with full gowning, including full-body coveralls, hood, cleanr
