Job description
At ABB, we help industries run leaner and cleaner—and every person here makes that happen. You’ll be empowered to lead, supported to grow, and proud of the impact we create together. Join us and help run what runs the world. This position reports to: R&D Team Lead __ Your role and responsibilities At the ABB Corporate Research Center Germany (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd4BLrNbvlc), we research and prototype innovative technologies that shape ABB’s future product portfolio for sustainable automation, digitalization, and electrification. We work in cross-functional teams at the intersection of industrial research, end-customers, start-ups, and universities globally. The work model for the role is: hybrid #LI-Hybrid You will be mainly accountable for: You bridge the gap between academic research and industrial applications and drive the innovation in simulation, system modelling and industrial digitalization to contribute to future ABB solutions. You develop and apply hybrid modeling that combines analytical approaches and data-driven methods to represent the behavior of assets in process industry and manufacturing. You leverage physics-informed AI methods that combine first-principles knowledge of industrial systems to develop more interpretable, efficient, and reliable models for simulation and process optimization. You bring a system integration perspective to your work, meaning you understand how components, control logic, and physical dynamics interact at plant or system level, rather than focusing on purely mathematical modeling. You build simulation models used to validate control logic, support scenario analysis, and enable process optimization and operator training for complex industrial processes.· You converge domain expertise with engineering practice, translating knowledge of industrial plant dynamics into robust simulation and monitoring systems. With your technical expertise, you initiate, guide, and contribute to applied research projects, and you provide consultancy to product development teams. You collaborate internationally with ABB divisions, customers, partners, startups, and renowned academic institutes. You build prototypes and demonstrators, and you bring a software development and architecture mindset to turn simulation models into usable, maintainable tools. You present your work to expert and management audiences within and outside ABB, as well as at scientific conferences/journals and trade fairs. You secure intellectual property by patent applications. Qualifications for the role You hold a degree in engineering, scientific computing, mathematics, physics, or a related discipline with specialization on modeling and simulation, combined with either academic experience (PhD) or professional experience in applied modeling and simulation. Experience with model based, data based, and/or physics-informed AI based simulation and monitoring methods for dynamic systems. Domain knowledge of industrial plant or process dynamics, with a focus on system level behavior and system integration. Experience with machine learning and AI methods, including neural networks, deep learning, or reinforcement learning, preferably applied to dynamical systems, process modeling, or real-world applications. Experience in one or more of the following application areas is beneficial: automation engineering, industrial control, condition monitoring, advanced process control and optimization. Hands on experience in software development and software architecture is a plus (for example Python, C++, Modelica, or similar). Hands on experience with simulation and modeling tools is a plus (such as OpenModelica, Julia, FMU based co-simulation, DWSIM, the IDEAS PSE framework, or commercial tools such as Dymola, Aspen HYSYS, Matlab Simulink / Simscape or similar). Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal. German is a plus.We value cross-cultural communication skills, creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and result-orientation to bring your innovations towards new products and digital offerings.
