Job description
About Marvell Marvell’s semiconductor solutions are the essential building blocks of the data infrastructure that connects our world. Across enterprise, cloud and AI, and carrier architectures, our innovative technology is enabling new possibilities. At Marvell, you can affect the arc of individual lives, lift the trajectory of entire industries, and fuel the transformative potential of tomorrow. For those looking to make their mark on purposeful and enduring innovation, above and beyond fleeting trends, Marvell is a place to thrive, learn, and lead. Your Team, Your Impact Help build the optical connectivity that moves AI forward. AI performance depends on more than compute—it depends on how efficiently data moves. At Marvell, you’ll help turn advanced coherent DSP technology into high-performance hardware platforms that enable faster, more power-efficient optical networks. This position is based in our Irvine, California office and requires working onsite five days per week. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available. What You Can Expect Join the team developing hardware platforms for Marvell’s coherent digital signal processors (DSPs), critical enablers of high-speed transmission over fiber-optic networks. Our technology supports the bandwidth, reach, and efficiency demanded by hyperscale cloud infrastructure and telecommunications networks worldwide. Across Marvell, semiconductor innovation helps customers scale up compute, scale out networks, and scale across interconnected data centers. Within that broader mission, our team focuses on coherent optical connectivity—transforming advanced silicon into reference designs and evaluation platforms that demonstrate performance and accelerate customer adoption. As a Sr. Staff Hardware Design Engineer, you’ll work at the intersection of high-speed electronics, optical communications, and system engineering, solving the physical design challenges that determine how effectively next-generation silicon performs in the real world. Your Impact Take technical ownership of complex board-level designs, from architecture and simulation through bring-up, characterization, and validation. Your engineering decisions will directly influence platform performance, design quality, and development execution. Develop high-performance coherent DSP platforms. Design reference boards and evaluation systems supporting 400G/800G-per-wavelength optical transmission, including power delivery, control, clocking, high-speed I/O, and form-factor requirements. Push high-frequency signal integrity. Architect, simulate, and characterize high-speed interconnects and signal paths with bandwidth requirements exceeding 110 GHz, correlating simulation results with laboratory measurements. Engineer robust power delivery. Design and simulate power circuits and power distribution networks that meet the demanding requirements of high-performance coherent DSPs. Translate silicon requirements into complete systems. Collaborate with systems, analog, digital, firmware, design-for-test, failure analysis, validation, and applications engineers to define platform requirements and resolve design tradeoffs. Lead board bring-up and debug. Partner with hardware and firmware engineers to establish initial functionality, isolate issues, and drive corrective actions. Prove performance through disciplined validation. Develop and execute board validation plans, analyze results, and produce detailed reports documenting performance, issues, and recommendations. Resolve complex hardware failures. Perform board-level failure analysis, identify root causes, and define necessary repairs or design improvements. Deliver manufacturable designs. Work with PCB layout engineers, fabrication suppliers, and assembly partners to define placement, stack-ups, routing constraints, and design rules that support quality and timely delivery. Strengthen engineering execution. Contribute technical guidance, design reviews, and practical improvements that help the team build better hardware with fewer iterations. What Can You Expect Work on a critical challenge in AI infrastructure. Help address the bandwidth and power constraints that shape how cloud and AI networks grow. Own the full hardware development cycle. Carry designs from initial requirements through simulation, fabrication, bring-up, and validated performance. Combine deep analysis with hands-on engineering. Move between electromagnetic simulation, schematic design, laboratory measurements, and system-level troubleshooting. Collaborate across disciplines. Work directly with specialists whose expertise spans silicon architecture, high-speed analog design, firmware, optical systems, and customer applications. Build expertise with lasting relevance. Deepen your capabilities in coherent DSP platforms, high-frequency signal integrity, power integrity, and advanced PCB implementation. Make a visible technical contribution. Bring your judgment to complex design decisions and help translate Marvell’s semiconductor innovation into platforms customers can evaluate and adopt. What We're Looking For You bring strong board-level design fundamentals, sound engineering judgment, and the persistence to solve difficult problems from simulation through the lab. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline, with at least five years of relevant experience in high-speed board-level hardware design. Demonstrated ability to independently drive complex hardware designs through development, bring-up, and validation. Experience designing systems incorporating power circuits, analog circuitry, clocking, FPGAs, microprocessors, microcontrollers, memory, Ethernet, SerDes, or related technologies. Proficiency in schematic capture and component library management using OrCAD CIS/CIP, Altium, or equivalent tools. Experience with high-frequency signal integrity simulation using Ansys HFSS, SIwave, Keysight ADS, or equivalent tools, and characterization using vector network analyzers and time-domain reflectometry. Experience with analog and power circuit design and simulation using PSpice or equivalent tools. Experience working with PCB layout engineers and board manufacturers to establish component placement, layer stack-ups, routing constraints, and fabrication requirements. Hands-on expertise in board bring-up, testing, characterization, and failure analysis using digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related laboratory equipment. Ability to correlate simulations with measured results, explain discrepancies, and turn findings into effective design improvements. Clear technical communication, thorough documentation, and effective collaboration across engineering teams and external suppliers. Expected Base Pay Range (USD) 129,100 - 191,030, $ per annum The successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location and market conditions. The expected base pay range for this role may be modified based on market conditions. This role is eligible to participate in Marvell's bonus and equity plans, including a new hire equity grant and annual equity refreshers, ensuring you are rewarded for your contributions and remain invested in the company's long-term success. Additional Compensation and Benefit Elements Marvell is committed to providing exceptional, comprehensive benefits that support our employees at every stage - from internship to retirement and through life’s most important moments. Our offerings are built around four key pillars: financial well-being, family support, mental and physical health, and recognition. Highlights include an employee stock purchase plan with a 2-year look back, family support programs to help balance work and home life, robust mental health resources to prioritize emotional well-being, and a recognition and service awards to celebrate contributions and milestones.
