Job description
Work Schedule Standard (Mon-Fri) Environmental Conditions Laboratory Setting Job Description How Will You Make an Impact? The Staff Scientist, Verification & Validation will serve as a senior technical leader within Singapore’s Genetic Sciences Division (GSD) V&V organization, providing deep V&V leadership across programs and helping strengthen Singapore as a Center of Excellence supporting the broader GSD portfolio. The role will develop and lead system-level V&V strategies across instruments, consumables, reagents, assays, software, and integrated workflows. The successful candidate will operate at the intersection of science and engineering, using strong experimental design, systems thinking, and technical judgment to identify risks, investigate complex interactions, and generate evidence that supports product readiness. This role will also help rethink how V&V is performed through scripting, automation, advanced analytics, and appropriate AI-assisted methods. The Staff Scientist will develop reusable technical capabilities, mentor other scientists and engineers, and help raise the technical standard and efficiency of V&V across the organization. What will you do? Lead System-Level V&V Strategy Develop and provide technical leadership for system- and workflow-level V&V strategies across GSD programs and platforms. Translate customer needs, intended use, requirements, and risks into measurable acceptance criteria and robust, risk-based test approaches. Design and guide studies that evaluate system performance, reliability, robustness, and end-to-end workflow performance. Provide independent, evidence-based technical assessments of product readiness and residual risk. Validate Integrated Life-Science Systems Evaluate interactions across instruments, software, consumables, reagents, assays, and data workflows under representative customer-use conditions. Develop representative use cases, sample sets, and challenge conditions to assess system performance and workflow robustness. Characterize biological and technical sources of variability and determine their impact on overall system performance. Partner with Systems and R&D teams early in development to identify requirements gaps, integration risks, and testability limitations. Lead Technical Problem-Solving and Product Quality Lead investigation of complex system-level issues involving interactions across scientific and engineering disciplines. Apply structured root-cause analysis, statistical methods, design of experiments, and targeted testing to identify underlying failure mechanisms. Convert program learning into reusable test methods, technical knowledge, and recommendations that strengthen future product development. Partner with Quality and Regulatory teams to ensure V&V evidence is scientifically sound, traceable, and suitable for design and regulatory review. Modernize V&V Through Automation, Data and AI Develop and adopt reusable, scalable approaches for test execution, data capture, analysis, and reporting. Apply scripting, automation, advanced analytics, and AI-assisted methods to improve test planning, traceability, coverage assessment, anomaly detection, and technical documentation. Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and V&V cycle time while maintaining scientific rigor, quality, and compliance. Ensure appropriate human oversight, data governance, traceability, and validation rigor when applying AI and advanced analytics. Build Technical Capability Serve as a senior technical mentor to scientists and engineers in system V&V, experimental design, data analysis, and technical problem-solving. Develop reusable V&V methods, datasets, analysis approaches, and best practices that can be applied across programs and platforms. Help broaden technical capability across qPCR, Microarray, CE/HID, and other GSD technologies as portfolio needs evolve. Collaborate across the global GSD organization and contribute to Singapore’s growth as a source of product insight, technical leadership, and innovation. How will you get here? I. Education Bachelor’s degree in a related science or engineering field with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience. Relevant disciplines may include molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, analytical sciences, physical sciences, or related science or engineering fields. II. Experience Demonstrated experience developing and leading system-level V&V strategies for complex, multidisciplinary life-science products. Experience validating integrated systems involving instruments, consumables, reagents, assays, software, and data workflows. Demonstrated experience designing and executing complex V&V, analytical-performance, or system-characterization studies. Experience supporting products through requirements, development, verification, product launch, and lifecycle improvement. Experience working in a global, cross-functional product-development environment. Experience with qPCR, dPCR, genetic-analysis systems, molecular diagnostics, or related life-science workflows is preferred. Experience applying scripting, automation, advanced analytics, or AI-assisted approaches to improve V&V or engineering workflows is highly desirable. III. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong knowledge of system-level V&V, requirements traceability, risk-based testing, and integrated product validation. Strong experimental design, statistical analysis, design of experiments, method development, and root-cause investigation skills. Ability to understand interactions across scientific and engineering elements, including instruments, software, consumables, reagents, assays, and workflows. Understanding of design controls, quality systems, and regulatory expectations in a regulated or quality-controlled product-development environment. Practical experience with scripting, coding, automation, or data-analysis tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, or similar tools is an advantage. Practical understanding of AI and machine-learning methods, including their appropriate application, limitations, and validation considerations. Familiarity with reliability, usability, cybersecurity, and connected laboratory systems is an advantage. IV. Leadership and Behaviors Scientifically rigorous, technically hands-on, curious, and action-oriented. Strong systems thinker who connects experimental evidence with customer, product, and business outcomes. Challenges assumptions constructively and surfaces technical risks early. Demonstrates sound judgment in balancing rigor, speed, evidence, and risk. Able to influence effectively across scientific and engineering disciplines without relying on formal authority. Mentors others, shares technical knowledge, and raises the technical standard of the organization. Thoughtful and responsible in applying automation, AI, and emerging technologies. Strong written and verbal communication skills. At Thermo Fisher Scientific, each one of our 75,000 extraordinary minds has a unique story to tell.
