Our shared mission—to serve patients living with serious illnesses—drives all that we do. Since 1980, we’ve helped pioneer the world of biotech in our fight against the world’s toughest diseases. Amgen is advancing a broad and deep pipeline and portfolio of medicines to treat heart disease, obesity and obesity-related conditions, rare diseases, inflammatory conditions and cancer.  As a member of the Amgen team, you’ll help make a lasting impact on the lives of patients as we research, manufacture, and deliver innovative medicines to help people live longer, fuller happier lives. Our award-winning culture is collaborative, innovative, and science based. If you have a passion for challenges and the opportunities that lay within them, you’ll thrive as part of the Amgen team. Join us and transform the lives of patients while transforming your career. Senior Principal Scientist Integrated Technology, Computation & Experimental Biology What you will do Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will serve as a senior scientific and technology leader across Inflammation Research. You will define and execute integrated strategies that connect human biology, computation, AI-enabled reasoning, preclinical models and experimental testing to improve the quality, speed, and scalability of therapeutic discovery. Key Responsibilities: Leadership: provide scientific leadership for discovery programs, technology platforms, and strategic initiatives that integrate experimental biology and computational science. Lead cross-functional teams, create clarity in a rapidly evolving environment, and connect expertise across the organization to deliver results in a timely manner. Disease biology: Define ambitious, human-biology-led therapeutic hypotheses and translate them into coordinated computational analyses and decisive experiments. More particularly, connect human genetics, multi-omics, single-cell and spatial data, clinical observations, electronic or real-world data where appropriate, and experimental evidence to identify therapeutically actionable mechanisms. Computational expertise: Leverage AI-enabled analytical approaches such as machine learning and agentic workflows to synthesize literature and internal data, identify therapeutic mechanisms, prioritize targets, understand variants biology, design experiments, and continuously refine scientific models. Partner deeply with computational/data scientists, engineers; preclinical, clinical and translational scientists and modality teams. Pipeline: Define and guide program strategy, milestone, experimental prioritization, risk assessment, and resolution of complex scientific and technical issues. Design, direct, analyze, and interpret rigorous experimental studies that interrogate target biology and support drug discovery. Be accountable for scientific quality and delivery against longer-term objectives Innovative Technology: Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies that create a meaningful step change and scale up inflammation research, including in vivo perturbation screens, high-content imaging, functional genomics, phenotypic screens, advanced human tissue models, scalable perturbational systems for automation, and multimodal data integration. Recognize scientific, technological, and industry trends beyond the immediate area and translate them into actionable opportunities for programs, capabilities, and departmental strategy. Communication: Mentor and provide scientific and technical guidance to colleagues across functions, while fostering an inclusive, connected, curious, and high-performing culture. Communicate complex science, uncertainty, and recommendations effectively to project teams, senior leaders, governance forums, and external scientific audiences.  Build external scientific and technological eminence through collaborations, conference participation, publications, patents, and other reviewed scientific or technical outputs. What we expect of you We are all different, yet we all use our unique contributions to serve patients. The Senior Principal Scientist we seek is a research leader with these qualifications. Basic Qualifications: Doctorate degree PhD OR PharmD OR MD [and relevant post-doc where applicable] and 3 years of computational biology and multi-omics data integration experience OR Master’s degree and 6 years of computational biology and multi-omics data integration experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of computational biology and multi-omics data integration experience. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to work independently with considerable latitude, establish objectives, integrate activities across projects, and make high-quality decisions within a function or department. Demonstrated excellence in project leadership and the ability to balance scientific rigor, strategic focus, urgency, adaptability, and operational execution. Experience leading cross-functional scientific teams or serving as a lead scientist or technological resource for programs, platforms, or capabilities. Broad knowledge of leading experimental and computational biology, while connecting adjacent innovation and technology areas. Demonstrated ability to integrate both experimental and computational approaches is required rather than operating primarily within a single discipline Track record of solving complex scientific problems through ingenuity, creativity, rigorous experimentation, quantitative reasoning, and integration of diverse evidence. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to frame complex science, data limitations, uncertainty, and recommendations for technical and senior leadership audiences. Commitment to coaching and mentoring others, collegial behavior sharing knowledge, and building a connected, inclusive, and inspiring environment in which colleagues can thrive Deep expertise in inflammation, immunology, tissue biology, human disease biology, computational biology, preclinical models, systems biology, imaging, bioengineering, or a closely related field. Experience using AI-enabled tools, agentic workflows, advanced analytics, quantitative modeling, or multimodal data integration to generate and test biological hypotheses. Strong record of designing or applying human-relevant experimental systems, including primary cells, murine models, patient-derived tissues, organotypic models, co-cultures, perturbational systems, functional genomics, imaging, single-cell, spatial, or multi-omic approaches. Ability to identify where technology can create a step change in biological understanding and to convert promising concepts into robust, reproducible, and scalable research capabilities. Experience advancing drug discovery programs and connecting mechanisms to target selection, modality, biomarkers, translational strategy, clinical differentiation, and portfolio value. Evidence of scientific influence beyond an immediate team, such as cross-functional leadership, external collaborations, invited presentations, lead or senior authorship in publications, patents, or widely adopted technological methods. What you can expect of us As we work to develop treatments that take care of others, we also work to care for your professional and personal growth and well-being. From our competitive benefits to our collaborative culture, we’ll support your journey every step of the way. The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
