This position reports to: R&D Team Lead __ Your role and responsibilities In this role, you will join the Product Care team within ABB Smart Buildings, contributing to the continuous improvement and evolution of our People Protection product portfolio. You will work across the product development cycle, from concept generation and 3D design to engineering analysis, prototyping, testing, and industrialization support. You will collaborate with experienced engineers and manufacturing teams, applying modern engineering tools, digital technologies, and Artificial Intelligence solutions to solve technical challenges and improve product development processes. The work model for the role is: Hybrid This role is contributing to the People Protection product portfolio within ABB Smart Buildings in Vittuone (Milan), Italy. Main stakeholders are R&D, Product Care, Quality, Operations, Purchasing, Manufacturing Engineering, laboratories, and suppliers. You will be mainly accountable for: Supporting Product Care activities for existing products, ensuring technical robustness, quality, competitiveness, and continuous improvement. Developing and modifying 3D CAD models and technical documentation, as well as performing engineering studies and simulations to evaluate product performance, reliability, and manufacturability. Designing, building, and validating prototypes in collaboration with laboratories, suppliers, and manufacturing teams, while supporting root cause analysis and cost reduction initiatives. Exploring and applying new technologies, materials, digital engineering methods, and AI-based approaches to improve design efficiency, problem solving, and product development processes. Qualifications for the role Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent Engineering qualification. Good knowledge of 3D CAD design, with experience in CATIA V5 and/or Creo highly appreciated. Basic knowledge of engineering simulations, such as structural, thermal, or multiphysics analysis, with experience in prototype development, testing, or product validation considered an advantage. Interest in Digital Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and data-driven product development; knowledge of MATLAB is a plus. Knowledge of SAP and PLM/PDM systems, together with good command of Microsoft Office tools. You are passionate about hands-on engineering, problem solving, and continuous improvement, with a curious, proactive mindset and willingness to learn in a dynamic international environment. You are at ease communicating in Italian and English, both written and spoken.
